So when I get my Jeep, and order my angry face kit so everyone knows how aggressive I am, I order a set of massive wheel and tires. I get a 5th wheel for the back. What do I do with it? Is there a 5 tire rotation scheme? Does it never get used? If I don’t u se it , when I get new tires, do I get 5 new tires and throw the unused one away? Is that why people have tire covers: to avoid this confusion?
*Note: I'm doing none of this. But I am curious.

I am a firm believer in the five tire rotation. It makes no sense to me to have one tire with a very different wear pattern than the rest, that will eventually fall apart anyway. Better to extend the life of all of my tires.

Neat! I wonder how many do it. I feel like those are always pristine back there, and just for show.

And you have a real spare that gets replaced frequently. As supposed to the dry rotted piece of trash in the truck of my 18 year old Miata, for example

Somewhere there’s an even more dramatic example but I can’t find it at the moment.

I utilize a five tire rotation on my Jeep. 33” skinny tires, but no angry eyes to display my adult angst.
I see a lot of people with oversized tires without a spare. I asked a guy about it once and he told me it was to save money on having to buy an aftermarket tire carrier. I just nodded and smiled.

Where do you find skinnies? I’m thinking about them for my next set but the skinniest I can find are still fairly wide.

Put the 5th into rotation. Just Jeepin’ covers the basics here. Also, get a cover. UV kills tires.

I’ve been seeing a lot lately with NO spare on the back (on 35" + tire wranglers)

Some people are reticent to buy a 5th tire when it comes time to replace. I mean some of those tires get SPENDY. That being said, its no good to have a rotten spare when you need it , even if it has great big lugs still. I always rotate in my 5th and buy 5 tires at a time.

Better than a donut.
If I had 35” or larger I’d be tempted not to carry one just because I’d be crippled trying to swap it. My back can’t take it.

I can’t really cover mine, my 3rd brake light lives behind the wheel.

Buy 4 big wheels and tires, get can of Fix-a-flat in case one gets a flat.
Keep stock size on rear, with cover of choice. N
ever rotate because DGAF.

Oppo confession time: 2005 mini Cooper s had the supercharger up front, so battery went in back, so no spare tire. Car came with run flats. Well, screw run flats. Replaced them with regular tires and got me a can of fix a flat. Never had to use it

“Skinny” may be a relative term. I’m running 255/80r17 Toyo Open Country ATIIs. Referred to by some as “ pizza cutters”. Not skinny by old school standards, but skinnynfor a JK.

Skinnier than anything I found. Thanks for the tip.

It’s very odd. I’ve seen hard core Jeepers that should know better not do five tire rotation. When I have a full-size spare mount on my XJ that’s what I will do. Definitely don’t want odd sized spares.

I’ve been eyeing some Interco ones. Not super skinny but skinnier than most.

I got mine from:
Fast and free shipping and they have some killer deals sometimes. Got $125 off my order of five tires. Paid Firestone like $50 for the install.

thats good, wranglers have such low payloads...every little bit counts!

What I find particularly confusing
is that most serious Jeepers
like to try different tires over time, making it even less likely that their
spare tire will be useful after the rest are worn out.

When I had my 07’ Wrangler I put 35x12.5’s on it. I bought 5, and rotated ALL my tires 4 times a year. I’m sure someone’s already posted the pics of 5 tire rotation schemes for 4WD vehicles.

If I had ever gotten a flat when I had 10-ply tires I highly doubt that a can would hold together whatever savage thing occurred to the tire. Carry a m atching spare.

In those cases that spare is like a hilift jack. You hope like hell you don’t need it but when shit hits the fan it’s nice.

I’ve never thought about this before, but are people with directional tires stuck with a donut spare? Can’t rotate the four if they’re directional, can only swap fronts and backs.

Apparently unmounting is your only option.

Don’t know anything about directional tires so ¯\_()_/¯
